The past two years have been challenging for everyone in different ways. Mental health providers have been exposed to patient’s traumas, on top of their own personal trauma. This workshop is designed particularly to support the provider, offering trauma-sensitive approaches to cultivating balance and ease in both the nervous system and heart/mind. Though some of the practices can be shared with clients, the focus will be on “healing the healer”. This approach is predicated on the belief that the spaciousness and ease of the provider directly benefits the patient, as well as all those around you. The workshop will involve guided practices, large and small group discussions and short presentations on topics related to mental and emotional balance. Participants are expected to have some familiarity with mindfulness meditation, but yoga experience is not required. In addition to one hour of Kaiut yoga each day, possible focus areas include: equanimity, forgiveness, kindness and compassion, emotion theory, mindfulness of mind, and working with anger.
Kaiut Yoga is a unique approach to yoga developed by Brazilian yoga teacher Francisco Kaiut. Unlike many other forms of yoga which focus on stretching muscles, Kaiut Yoga begins with a focus on the nervous system, which all too often has become overcharged, depleted, or even traumatized by the incessant demands of modern life. Kaiut Yoga approaches the nervous system in a way that is exceedingly kind and nourishing, delivering rest and replenishment, safety and security at this most fundamental level. From this place of greater ease in the nervous system, the yoga can then safely and effectively approach not only the physical body, but the mental and emotional bodies as well, delivering a depth of transformation and healing all throughout the system which would not otherwise be possible.
Truly a yoga for everybody and for every body, Kaiut Yoga offers an opportunity to anyone who is willing to come to a yoga mat to experience the remarkable benefits of this practice.
This course is being organized in Buenos Aires, Argentina and will be offered in English and Spanish with simultaneous translation of all workshop content. Native speakers of both languages are invited to attend.
This program will be facilitated by two highly trained and internationally known teachers:
Margaret Cullen:
Margaret Cullen is a licensed psychotherapist and was one of the first ten people to become a Certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher. For over 25 years, she has pioneered secular contemplative programs for a wide variety of populations including physicians, nurses, HIV positive men, cancer patients, overweight women, military spouses college students, clinicians and educators. She has developed and taught contemplative interventions for research studies at Stanford, UCSF, Portland State, Penn State, University of Michigan, and University of Miami. In 2013, she developed a mindfulness and compassion program (MBAT – Spouse) for military spouses that she piloted at Ft. Drum, Maxwell Air Force Base, and Joint Operations Special Command. In 2015, she co-authored a book on Mindfulness-Based Emotional Balance (MBEB), an evidence-based program that she piloted across the US and Canada. She has also designed and co- delivered teacher trainings for both MBAT-Spouse and MBEB.
As a clinician, Margaret has been a facilitator of support groups for cancer patients and their loved ones for 25 years. In 2010, she was invited by Thupten Jinpa to contribute to the development of the Compassion Cultivation Training, first through the Center for Compassion, Altruism, Research and Education at the Stanford School of Medicine and currently as Founding Faculty for the Compassion Institute. A meditator for over almost 40 years, she has sat dozens of intensive retreats ranging from
ten days to three months and has written extensively on mindfulness. Nothing brings her greater joy than contributing to a more compassionate world.
Wendy Zerin:
Wendy Zerin, MD has been practicing yoga since 1989. She has been studying with Francisco Kaiut since 2014 and is a certified Kaiut Yoga instructor. Wendy is the founding teacher at Barn Yoga in Boulder, Colorado, where she has been offering
classes since 2017. In addition to her experience over the course of thirty-three years as a yoga practitioner, Wendy also draws on her background as a physian and a teacher of mindfulness meditation to bring an unusual depth of understanding of mind and body to her yoga teaching. When not practicing or teaching Kaiut Yoga, Wendy can be found hiking in thefoothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains or spending time with her three grandchildren.
